[영화개론] 확장영화 - 베를린의 말_말콤 르 그레이스
- 작가 소개 (Malcolm Le Grace)
1940년 5월 생으로 영국에서 태어나 화가로 작품을 시작했던 그는, 1960년대 중반에 들어서 필름과 컴퓨터를 활용하여 그의 작품을 만들었다.
그 이후로 그는 영국에서 가장 혁신적인 영화 제작자 및 이론가로 평가받고 있으며, 특히 실험 영화에 있어서 큰 관심을 끌고 있다.
특히 이번 실험 영화제 기간중 상영하였던, EX-Live의 확장영화 중 특히 말콤 르 그라이스(Malcolm Le Grice)의 베를린의 말(Berlin Horse)에 초점을 두어 기술하고 싶다.
태어나 처음으로 필름 영화를 상영한다는 것 자체가 나에겐 흥미롭고 새롭게 다가온 시간이었지만, 필름 영화라는 매채 보다 더 나에게 강한 인상을 던져주었던 것은 이번 실험영화이다. 관심을 필름영화, 물론 실험영화라는 것에도 초점을 두고 갔지만, TV 브라운관이나 모니터 이변에 있던 이전 필름영화와는 달리, ‘실험영화’ 라는 그 자체가 나에겐 시사하는 바가 컸다.
영화는 총 9분. 칙칙칙 소리를 내며 돌아가는 아날로그 필름 영사기를 통해 어둡고 컴컴한 영상관 안에서 한 줄의 빛줄기기가 스크린에 부딪혀 상을 만들어내고, 관객들은 거기에 몰두한다. 어떠한 영상이 나올까.
한 마리의 말 등장. 안마당을 끊임없이 돌고 돈다. 단순한 멜로디의 반복. 컬러와 흑백의 부조화(不調和). 이것이 내가 보았던 베를린의 말(Berlin Horse)이다.
사실 영화 내용은 아무 것도 없다. 말이 안 마당을 도는 것이 전부이다. 하지만 영화의 구성에 있어서, 실세계를 따르는 내러티브성을 부정하며, 작가 고유만의 실험영화 즉, 구성과 영상과 씬(Scene)을 구축했다는 점이 새롭게 다가왔다. 단순히 영화의 추상성이 영상의 비재현성에 좌우되지 않고, 종래의 원근법을 거부한다는 것에서 작가의 표현이 두드러져 보였다.
또한 흥미로웠던 것은 두 개의 필름을 오버랩(Overlap)기법을 사용한 것이다. 이것을 영화에서는 전문 용어로 ‘합성화면(Superimposition)’이라고 한다. 8mm 컬러 필름과, 16mm 흑백 필름을 합쳐 하나의 화면으로 재생하였다. 결과물은 흑백화면과 이를 반전한 네거티브(Negative)화면 그리고 컬러 화면이 연속적으로 번갈아 가며 재생되었다. 또한 화면에서 나온 ‘말’의 반복적인 움직임과, 영상에서 흘러나온 단순하고 반복적인 멜로디 또한 작가의 의도적인 매치가 아닌가 생각해 볼 수 있었다.
베를린의 말(Berlin Horse)은 재미를 두고 보기보다는, 단어 그대로 ‘실험 영화’라는 것에 입각해 봤을 때 그 의미를 제대로 깨달을 수 있는 것 같다. 현대 영화와는 달리 ‘어떤 재미를 추구 할까’ 보다는, 실재 영상 재현 자체에 있어 작가의 다양한 시도를 통한 노력이 묻어나는 그런 작품이었다.
내용은 단지 말이 뛰 노는 것 밖에는 없지만, 당시 영화라는 ‘예술’에만 국한하지 않고 ‘기술’에 있어 더 많은 발전과 진보를 ‘실험영화’라는 도구를 활용해 추구 한 다는 점이 흥미로웠다. 아마도 이런 작품들이 수업시간에 다루었던 아방가르드의 계승이며, 현대 예술의 출발점이자, 우리가 현재 관심있게 지켜보고, 다루고 있는 미디어아트의 중요한 전사(prehistory)가 된 것은 아닐까 생각하며 글을 줄여본다.

그는 1960년대 Chelsea School of Art에서 그림을 공부하였다. 그 뒤, 영화 작업과 라이브 퍼포먼스를 하였고 빛과 시간이 기초가 되는 영화를 하였다. 최근 그의 작품은 많은 프로젝터와 광학적 사운드, 그리고 설치미술을 포함한다.
그는 현재 런던에 살고있고 Middlesex University 와 University of Wolverhampton에서 가르치고 있다.
그의 저서로는 2007년에 출간된 'Optical Sound Films 1971-2007'가 있다.

전 날, 확장영화를 상영한 터라 오늘의 상영에서는 조금 더 영화의 기법에 대해 관심을 가지고 볼 생각으로 극장을 찾았다. 몇 가지 영상이 상영되었는데, 작품들 가운데 특히 인상 깊었던 것은 ‘모음과 자음(Vowels & Consonants)’이다.
모음과 자음의 제목은 사전에 알 고 있어서 많음 모음과 자음들을 활용해 무엇인가 보여주려 하는 줄 알았는데 단 4개의 단어, bdpq를 가지고 화면에서는 간단한 효과를 보여주었다.
카메라를 사용하지 않고 bdqp의 글자를 16mm 필름 위에 아세테이트와 컴퓨터 프린팅을 이용하여 보여지는 글자는 그 사운드와 함께 절묘하게 조화를 이루었다. 사운드는 무엇인가 불에 그을리는 듯하였으며, 글자는, 흐릿한 효과(Blur)가 가미된 듯 하였다.
해당 글자가 사운드 트렉을 지나 갈 때 그에 대한 소리를 들을 수 있었다. 작가가 사용한 기존에 소리를 내는 방법을 벗어나 글자 그 자체로 사운드를 형성한 것이 새로운 시도로 보여진다. 글자의 모양이 다르듯, 글자의 소리도 그렇게 들리는 듯 하다. 사운드 트렉에 걸리는 ‘O’의 문자가 ‘E’의 문자보다 더욱 부드럽게 들린다.

[Summary] 6/4 - Final
On a sudden for me, this lecture is last class. I feel a semester is so quickly go beyond. Even though I don't reaching to dr.yoon about age, I unerstand a little about that special age come to me so quickly. I'm enter university before 3 years but feel that is not long term. Also this semester is so quickly go beyond and I face with final exam. why time speed is increase at the same time in proportion to my age. Last class, we are talking about open-source. Virus, Microsoft, processing and so on. I remember the word 'last class' better than these ward. I'm thankful to dr.yoon for good lecture during a semester. And at the same time this summary also finish. God bless you!

[Summary] 5/21, 5/23
This week, we are talked about public&privacy. Especially I was feel more interested in surveillance camera. Generally, purpose of surveillance camera is crime prevention. Because It can detect some location and move course about the target. So, It is useful find a criminal. But this camera is disturbance people's privacy. For example, crime prevention camera is can hidden camera. Also It can outflow person's information who are not wanted. Surveillance camera is positioning a boundary line between public and privacy so it is used by right purpose. Therefore, it is used with right purpose and developed for adjustive purpose.

[Summary] 5/14, 5/16
Media is bring to comfortable and advantage life for us. For example, before we written a summary in lecture by a pencil and a paper but these day we are use a laptop. Another example is find way. Before we are used a map when we are want to some destination but nowadays we use navigation to find somewhere. It can find some place so we are just follow he's command. These development is not bring many benefit but also yield some bad effect. Mobile phone is bring many convenience at the same time Phone number list is disappear. Mobile phone replace it. People don't memorize phone number but it is saved their phone. Even some people don't know their family phone number. Like this, media development is bring to many advantage for us at the same time bring about some bad side.

[Summary] 5/9, 5/7
This week we are talked about computer game. Especially Pain Station is so impression for me. Usually, game is playing to interesting and joy but pain station is not. It look like want to hart. If I get socre, opposite is hit by a leather strap. They feel fun when opposite hit. Is this a game?
I don't play computer game, but I making computer game. This semester I attending a lecture (game engineering - prof.kyung soo oh) so regulary 2 week making one game. I feel make game is so hard. Make character on a screen, and move, and collision detection and so on...
Game goal is that user have to feel fun but bring about a bad result. User more and more become painful. Game is fun when this are game. More than game is bad thing. Game player and game maker are owing to consider that side.

[Summary] 4/30, 5/2
I realized something that computer is offer to convenience and importance for people through lecture. For example, if someone want to drawing so he need to a penclil and a ruler. But, after introduction of CAD only need to computer and mouse. Also, drawer only can drawing, he can't other but after he can almost everything by using computer.
In military, before military personnel calculate location to using cannon but after it is automatic so more efficient.
As a result, computer is tender to people more efficient, comfortable and so on. But, disadvantage also happened at the same time. Factory automatic is fire many employer. And crime prevention camera bring about private problem.
In the future, we will make more efficiency computer technology and bridge a gap this problem.

[Summary] 4/23, 4/25
I think that technology is some software and machine, but after lecture I know that is not. Of course, technology include software and machine. But more correctly definition is that technology is came from people. For example, pot is sometihng to made by human's need. And M.S(MicroSoft) company propose people to using Window Vista but people keep on using Window XP. It is also technology(management technology). That is as if look like between media and people are interrelation. Technology is too.
In class, we are saw interactive art using by webcam. I feel it is very nice and wonderful. Technology is make more richness, wealth and interesting. It is come up to me so big meaning.
ELIZA also interesting. I also used that. but I don't feel how that are funny. ELIZA talk to person and person talk to ELAIZA. I think it is also Technology.
PS. dr.yoon, please update lecture ppt more quickly. Last time I try to download ppt before beginning of lecture 5minute. But they don't used. Link are broken. Please more concern it..^_^

[Summary] 4/11
Today we are talking about A.I. That is initial of Artificial Intelligence. At first of class, we saw the movie of A.I a little. I have been saw that movie yet. After saw, I thought, if I were made like this robot that is very interested thing. But know I'm making robot. Even though that robot are not like A.I robot, some day I want make that robot.
Imitation game is interested for me. Because this game imply what is standard between human and robot. There are a man and a woman or a man and a robot in room. Interrogator determine which of the other two is the man and which is the robot. It means robot also can thinking like human. How robot are thinking? It is supplied some skill from human. Then, that is robot? Answer is that is robot. Because robot gives people more convenience through input data. That is interested things.
Mid-term exam are came out nearly for me. I feel time was so quickly go over for me. Anyway, I try to do my best.
Imitation game is interested for me. Because this game imply what is standard between human and robot. There are a man and a woman or a man and a robot in room. Interrogator determine which of the other two is the man and which is the robot. It means robot also can thinking like human. How robot are thinking? It is supplied some skill from human. Then, that is robot? Answer is that is robot. Because robot gives people more convenience through input data. That is interested things.
Mid-term exam are came out nearly for me. I feel time was so quickly go over for me. Anyway, I try to do my best.

[Summary]4/2, 4/4
What is social network? In generally speaking, we are saying that it is relation between person to person based on they know each other. But through lecture, ii realized that is out of range that I know. It is meaning relationship between people and people as well as include person's taste, concern and so on.
In last class, dr.yoon said about interested story about "six degrees of separation". A village want to send mail to B village. But they do not used post service, only used hand to person by person. Through about 6 person, the mail reached destination. I feel it is very surprise about that. At the same time, It makes me feel shyness. Because I don't know all resident who are living nearly from me. I examine oneself.
In Google case, In previous Google designed algorithm to make searching engine that the site rank was decided by how many people are linked that site. It is good express that how relation are important. But there is a problem duo to that algorithm..
In Amazon case, I know some interest things. It is system that used social network. If I want to buy a book, so go to more this web page, there are some books that are before other people are chose. It is interest system. Because it is offer new information to user at the same time, Amazone has a chance to more book marketing.
Next Wednesday was no class, so It makes me feel afraid but I expect next class about MAP.

[Summary] 3/26, 3/28
We are frequently contact to the word of "MEDIA". But, there are a few people who can reply about it's define. I'm also did not reply about it. But after class, I know about it through this phrase.
"People make media and then media make people."
That's right. I spend many time think about this phrase. To define Media is not separate it with our life but it is relate and interactive to our life. So, I think. Media make our life and then our life make media.
And then we are talk about nam-june paik. He is very famous artist. I also think he is very greate artist. Because he break exist art and make it with his own mental. I feel it is art of art. People can say about that it is not art. But he is express his own metal through art. It is very nice and wonderful masterpiece. Not only art but also him. I think it is really art.

[Summary] 3/21
This week has one class, so I'm write something to feeling and summary about that. Let me write about three things that I feel impression.
First, it is interested in process of make a poem. In write a poem, generally process is that think about content and write down about that. But that is reverse. I feel that is not poem. Because it is go over of poem form. It is something to out of poem.
Second, I agree with a man's opinion. In my think, civilization develop in history is selection of many people than the another about something condition. That is precedence and the other is select later feeling it is need. A man said about mouse, input-device and E-mail system to people. But they did not know about importance of these system. At present, like a man's opinion, these system is very important and necessary system for many people.
Third, H-LAM/T system. That is initial of "Human using Language, Artifacts, Methodology, in which he is Trained" It is doing something that person want to do. Because this system is trained. It is convenience that Machine has more ability of something to do, at the same time, people has more rest time. I think it is like HCI(Human Computer Interaction).
The class is so interested to me. I'm glad to know about before I did not know and to know about something facts and opinions.

[Summary] 3/12, 3/14
Usually we can hear the word 'IT', but a person didn't know what's mean about 'IT'. Even though there are same people in Soongsil university in IT-college. It is why I'm enrolled this lecture and motivation. so, I have to study, what is it and what it's mean.
At the first class, like in my curiousness, the article of "welcome to the present" is stimulate to my curiousness. If technique is developing, present also far a way at the same time. stone written this article with many example. The text is written english so, it is not easy for me to read, but through lecture I'm more understand.
Next time we learned "As we may think", it is so interested article. Especially, "memex" is so mavelous. "memex" is operating system to write, communicate and save by many books with speedily and flexibility process. It can make one infor-book that collecting need information. I'm considering mans. so I think. if I have this one, how I using it? I think, stone and bush article expression about technique something to do.
I have spended time about what is technique and understand about it. The lecture is doing in english so, a little hard for me to understanding perfectly. But, I'm more expect about improve my english skill and understand text. I'm looking forward to next class and this semester.
